Pride vs Progression

It has been in my experience that when you put a few half decent fly fisherman in the same room, an unspoken competition arises. We all know the scene, guys trying to out talk each other and prove one another wrong. Attempting to create an illusion of self-entitlement by showboating their knowledge in front of the rest. It gets old. I'm here to offer my thoughts on the subject.

Something we all have to realize is that someone will always be better than you are, know more than you do, have more experience, has put more time in the water than you have. It's true, and though that thought might be hard for you, when you can humble yourself enough to accept it, it can lead to great things.

One thing I always try to make an effort at doing is fishing with people who are better than I am. It didn't take too long for me to realize there are a lot of people who fly fish that also know a lot more than I do. Take advantage of this! It's a good thing. Don't feel threatened by the guy who catches more or bigger fish than you do. Instead, open your mind to the possibility that they might know some things you don't.

When you get the opportunity to spend time on the water with someone with higher developed skills than yours, use it as a learning experience. Observe what they are doing, and never hesitate to ask questions or for advice. They will most likely enjoy answering your questions and helping you improve. Do not let your pride hinder your progression as a fly fisherman.

I understand everyone has their own way of doing things that works best for them, what they have confidence in. I am not saying that everything someone with more experience tells you will lead to success. What I am saying is experiment with what they have to show you, grab pieces of advice from anywhere you can and piece it all together for you. Discover your formula for success on the water. Having and building confidence in your skills is a huge part of the game.

The rivers teach us, our mistakes teach us, and others teach us. We learn something new every trip we take. Consider it a gift to know those with greater abilities than yours and go fish with em.
