Step by Step: Mexican Standoff

Mooser here !

This fly is one that just came to me, I've been really working on minimizing, and profile for most of my streamer patterns right now ! Sometimes only using three to four materials, excluding hooks and dumbbell eyes.

A little background on this pattern...uhh well to be honest I was just messing around with materials for about a couple of weeks before this pattern was conceived !

Does it work....

Jake Villwock with an awesome muddy water bronzeback on the Mexican Standoff!  Also check out Jake's blog All Things Fly Fishing ! It is jam packed with awesomeness!

Hook:   Any jig hook of your choice
Eyes:    Lead dumbbell eyes of your choice
Tail:    Rabbit Strip and Marabou, of your choice
Body:   Estaz and Marabou of your choice (for the body the marabou is palmered like hackle and is a different color than the marabou tail section of the fly.)
Rubber Legs:  Any rubber leg of your choice
Head:  Palmered Rabbit Strip, cross cut preferred for easy palmering around the dumbbell eyes.  You can also use the rabbit strip as a collar behind the eyes and then finish the head off with some schlappen (around the dumbbell eyes)

1.) Place hook in vise and attach Dumbbell Eyes.

2.) First section of the tail, tie in your Marabou. Length of Marabou should be half the size of the hook shank or the full length (i.e. before the bend of the eye to where the bend of the hook starts.)

3.) Complete base of body by tieing the excess Marabou in.

4.) The length of the Rabbit Strip should be the whole hook length, like the marabou portion of the tail. Preen the Rabbit Strip hair appart to give you a clean and clear space to puncture the hook through the Rabbit Strip. If done correctly it should look like the picture below.

5.) Tie in the Rabbit Strip.

6.) Now with eccess Rabbit Strip pull it aside and dont trim...you will need this for a later step.  Now tie in some Eztaz of your choice.

7.) Now with still keeping the eccess Rabbit Strip and Estaz tied in,tie in a plum of Marabou but before this, preen or spread out the fibers by grabbing the very tips of the plum and pull down gently bringing the fibers down to the base of the stem.  At this time, the very fine tips of the Marabou are sepereated from the main bulk of the plum.  Now tie these tips in, securely and softly at first but then tightening on your next couple of wraps.

8.) Is that eccess Rabbit Strip still there ? With this step wrap the Estaz forwad and tie in.  Then palmer the Marabou forward. spacing on my wraps is not a huge issue.  Closer the wraps the fuller the body, the sparser the wraps the less amount of Marabou you will have on the body of the fly exsposing alittle bit more of that flashy Estaz body.

9.) With the Marabou all crazy and what not, half it ! Separate the Marabou equally on both sides of the body.

10.) Now I hoped you haven't trimmed that excess piece of Rabbit Strip yet ! Bring it on over top of the body and with some strong thread wraps secure it then trim !

12.) Now throw in some Rubber Legs ! Do not forget about the other side !

13.) Now take your Rabbit Strip and tie it in, I used a Magnum Strip for this but should have used a cross-cut instead since I palmered it around the Dumbbell Eyes and ommitted the Schlappen. If you use a Magnum cut Rabbit Strip only use it for the collar and then finish the fly off with your choice of Schlappen !

14.) Now your finished ! trim the head or keep as is...the choice is yours !
