Tiger Musky

I'm going to keep this one short because there's not much that needs to be said...the picture speaks for itself. Moose and I met up the night of a new moon and chased some muskies. We fished a new spot and boy did it pay off. In short, I cast my fly right off the shore over, and two strips into my cast this monster 43" tiger blew my shit up! Easily the sickest take I've had so far. He just ripped out of under a log jam and engulfed my entire fly just like that. It's 4 days later and I'm still jones'ing off of this fish. Gotta love it!

Another Great Day on the Water

So after Tuesday's Musky, it's all I can think about. I woke up at 3AM this morning and drove a little over two hours back towards school to meet up with a friend and float the river for Musky. The conditions were perrrrrrfect. Slightly misting, overcast, the day after a full moon, good water levels, decent clarity, etc.....needless to say we were feeling good. About an hour into our float I had a 40+" Musky follow my fly up to the boat. I figure 8ed and and swam big circles for about a minute but it was not interested. We were floating at a pretty good clip and there was no stopping so that didn't help. Until next time!

One thing that was a nice change of pace though was we hammered smallies. From my experience in the last year and what I've read, the Musky seem to like smaller flies this time of year, so the bigger smallmouth weren't shy. It was really nice to catch fish when the musky aren't cooperating. We saw one redd and the last fish of the day was a tad bit marked up, so we called it. This next week or two it'll be better to let them be and do their thing. Anything to help the reproduction process! If you do tag into one, please handle with care and release it in the same hole you caught it in. It makes all of the difference. Anyways, here are some pics! Sipping Trout and Ending the Drought

Sorry for the lack of posting folks. Between finals and moving across the state, Moose and I have both been swamped the last few weeks. Although I haven't been fishing as much, some great things have been happening! The hatches on all of the streams in Central PA have been popping off. Sulphurs were just starting to get heavy when I left, so keep those boxes full! I got out a few times before I moved out and it was extremely successful. Nothing is better than throwing on some 5x, a dry fly, and not having to worry about the hassle of nymphing. Here are a few pictures of what we've been getting into.

 

Now, what I am REALLY pumped about. One year and 5 days ago my Dad and I went out on our first musky trip of the year, and I caught my first two Musky ever...on conventional tackle. Now, fast forward to this year, with similar conditions, on a Tuesday again, at the same spot, at the same time, BAM, I hooked and landed my first ever Musky on the fly. I cast the fly pictured below close to the shore and after two strips, I stripset on what I thought was a bass. About 10 seconds later, this 28" Tiger Musky jumped a few feet out of the air right in front of us and my Dad yells "It's a Musky!" I fought it through a few more jumps and runs, and we landed this mini-beast. We howled in excitement and shared one of the greatest father-son moments I have ever had, next to the double we had last May. Needless to say, I will never forget this, and hopefully there will be many more to come.
