Beer Tie

This past Thursday we (Clark and Ty) headed West with our buddy Jon to the Instagram Beer Tie. Dennis, from OMF Fly Co, set the whole thing up. Pizza, Beers, Fly Tying, and The "Hot Stuff" Claw machine...which I will explain here shortly. We arrived at this huge pizza joint, vises and materials in hand, then weaved our way through a bunch of 30 something drunk milfs. Tucked in the back was a long wooden table with awesome lighting. Everyone set up shop around the table and we tied, drank and BS'ed for a good part of the night. We met a ton of great fly tiers and finally put some names to faces which was cool. Joel, from Vedavoo, was taking some awesome shots with his camera, which you can see below.

One of the highlights of the night was when Clark, fueled up on PBR, took a shot in the "Hot Stuff" Claw machine. First 50 cents he hooks into a Red Stuffed Pepper and loses it right at his feet. Then, round two, he hooks the Pepper again and a Stuffed Dora the Explorer. Doubled up at the beer tie...nice. Little did Dora know what was about to happen next. Clark went Iron Fly on the Stuffed Animals and came up with a Musky Fly that is sure to please. Dora, bound up and gagged on a 6/0. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Overall, it was an awesome night! We want to thank Dennis for setting everything up, and we hope to have another in the near future.

Musky Cheesin'

After a long dry spell I finally got one to eat. Brought this guy out of a deep log jam with a Big Cheesa this afternoon and saw him roll on it. He came in hot after my fly and turned three times on the 8. Ripped it away from him and he finally committed. It was an awesome eat to say the least. Thrashed around for a while then Clark came barreling in from 80yds away and netted him before things got dicey! When you go months without a hookup, you want that thing in the net as soon as possible...at least I do. Taped out at 40" and then swam off with vigor. Such an awesome day...now back to studying for finals

Morning Meat

Here are a couple of flies that have recently come off the vise. The musky fly has seen a few trips in this picture, but is still fishing strong. The streamer is a pattern I have been messing with and have finally settled on a good color combo. I call it the Tan Oh-Man. I plan to fish it for trout and bass mostly, but will also be bringing a couple to Florida with me in two weeks to see if the redfish are interested in them.

This winter when school and the fishing settles down, we plan to beef up the fly tying page big time. We will be adding step by step tutorials (pictures and videos) on how to tie a lot of the patterns you see here. If there are any patterns you would like to see specifically, drop us a comment below and we would be happy to slap it up. Enjoy

Hatches Reports, Opening Day, and Musky Flies

How's it going guys. Been slacking a bit lately with the blog, but not with the fishing! The weather has been pretty awesome the past week or two and we've been taking advantage of it. Due to the rain last week, we kept our efforts to Spring as it usually doesn't blow out. Midges and Little Black Stoneflies have been very consistent and fish are taking them up top! When the conditions cooperate, some heavy Blue Winged Olive hatches have been coming off too. Last Wednesday it was pretty sunny and a decent Grannom hatch came off on Spring in the afternoon. Overall, fishing has been pretty good. It's going to be awesome once the clarity gets a little better and the fish really start keying in on the dries.

Little Black Stonefly

Innnnnn other news, this weekend was the Western PA trout season opener. Like every opening day, we spent the weekend at the cabin with family and friends and it was a blast; the weather was beautiful for once too! Aside from the crowds and the token crazy bait fisherman, it's great to get out there and enjoy the time on the river. I spent a lot of time sitting on the bank, soaking up sun, and trading fish stories. Although the fishing was only decent, the memories will last forever. Ya can't beat that.

I will be headed home next weekend for Easter, and plan to do some Musky fishing with my Dad, which I am really looking forward to! I've been itching to get after them after my last float, and the conditions should be great (aside from the moon phase but oh well). Here are a few recent patterns I plan to fish this weekend. Hopefully the Musky gods will be with me and I can finally boat one. I've taken damn near 1000 casts since my last tango with a toothy so it's bound to happen soon. I've got a feeling....

This one swims real big

Last but not least, get out and fish people! The weather is beautiful and all streams should be coming alive.

A good day fishing and some sweet hackle

I met up with my buddy Evan, from Sidling Hill Hackle, bright and early to do some "almost spring" trout fishing here in Central PA.  It was a rough morning getting to the stream, seeing as I was a little too ambitious last night at the bar.  4 hours of sleep is plenty though and the day was great!  We caught a ton of fish Czech nymphing, which was a little new for me.  I've been rocking the dry fly dropper for a while now but this stream called for the Czech. Evan gave me some pointers and we were both catching fish in no time. Golden stoneflies, BWO nymphs, and Olive Scuds were the hot flies today. No fish pics today due to the rain...sorry folks.

Once we got back to the car, Evan gave me some of his awesome hackle and I hooked him up with some Musky flies that Moose and I tied. We couldn't be happier! Talk about some serious Musky Bacon. Hopefully the Musky are lovin it as much as I am. Check out Evan's hackle at sidlinghillhackle.blogspot.com

Musky Tips

So I've been spending my Sunday getting the Musky Boxes filled up and finishing up orders for our sponsor Sidling Hill Hackle, and the Keystone Fly Fishing Giveaway. I am going on a Musky float this Sunday and couldn't be more stoked for it. It's a new moon so the big girls should be out to play. Hopefully we can boat one!

If you're planning on chasing some toothies here are a few tips that I've picked up along the way.

1. Presentation
How you present your fly, just like any species, is the most important aspect of getting a Musky's attention. Musky are an ambush style fish and whether they are feeding or protecting their territories, when they hit your fly it's aggressive. You want to get their attention with a fly that pushes water, flashes a lot, or contrasts with the water color. Using a spun deer hair head helps push water without making the fly too bulky for casting.

That brings me to my next point.

2. Casting
For those like myself who never fished for anything other than trout before this, the casting stroke is different. If you try keeping your fly in the air like you would when you present a dry fly, you're going to beat yourself up and won't last a full day. A guy I work with taught me a much better, effective way to cast. The double haul. If you get your fly wet, shoot 20-30 feet of line out, keep another 60 feet or so next to you, then pick all of that line up and "load" the rod with your left hand by pulling the fly line  as you are casting forward. With this method, you can shoot 4x the amount of line out and cover a ton of water. This is especially useful for lake fishing when you have tons of room. The key is finding the sweet spot in the rod where the perfect amount of line loads it to it's max.

3. Retrieving
Varying your retrieves is always a good idea, especially when you are first starting out. What you want to remember is that they hit out of aggression. I find that speeding up when you see them following makes their aggression rise, because they love the chase. When you get your fly to the boat, make big figure 8's and circles with your rod tip in the water. The noise from your rod tip and change in direction makes them crazy.

4. Hookset
Stripset stripset stripset. I lost a mid 30's musky last year because I didn't stripset. It was a false hookset and I lost it after a minute or so. The first thing a musky does usually when you hook it is swim at the boat. Get it on the reel and hold on. It's going to start shaking its head, doing rolls, and maybe even some jumps! Keep your hooks sharp, preferably barbless, and big. Some flies we tie have hooks as big as 8/0!

5. Landing & Release
These fish take years and years to get into the 50s, so treat them with care! They might seem like big bad creatures but they can be extremely vulnerable. Try to keep them in the water as much as possible. If they lose their slime, it can severely damage them, plus it reiks. Also refrain from using Boga Grips to hold them; instead, put one hand under their jaw (not on the gills!) and another holding the tail. If you don't grab it like a maniac, it won't want to freak out on you...usually haha. Watch out for those teeth, and bring long pliers and hook cutters. They are essential. Lift your greased pig out of the water and take some shots! Then revive it, and release it. There is no reason to not keep these fish healthy and thriving in our waters. PA is lucky enough to even have Musky, and as anglers we need to preserve that.

Good luck folks! Don't get discouraged if you fish a whole day without a single follow or sighting. These fish are called the fish of 1000 casts for a reason. Every cast brings you more Musky Mojo as we like to call it, and means you're just that much closer to sticking a monster.

Tying Sesh

Moose and I got together on this insanely windy day and tied some musky meat. There's just something so enticing about these flies. Every fly that comes off the vise seems to be different. Once you get over the fact that you're using all of your material, it's incredibly enjoyable! Even if you don't Musky fish, I highly suggest tying one or two of these, even if it's just for fun. They're highly addicting.
